All you need to know about the New IPL Rules 2025

After making some changes to rules, the BCCI has left some unchanged from last season, keeping in view the glorious and thrilling enhancement of experiences that players and people present at this money-spinning T20 league have been going through.

The IPL 2025 season started with an exciting game against the Kolkata Knight Riders, the defending champions, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on 22nd March. Like every year, the new IPL Rules were finalized by the 10 captains and coaches who assembled at BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on the 20th of March before the start of the IPL tournament.

Most Significant New IPL Rules Changes for 2025

1. No Match Bans for Slow Over-Rates

The major relief for the captains has come with slow-over rates since now the BCCI has scrapped banning captains from the matches. Captains will be fined, in terms of money and demerit points, if the team is unable to complete the given number of overs in the required amount of time, if slow.

A captain will earn a 25-75% penalty of their match fees on a Level 1 offense.

The captain shall receive four demerit points for a Level 2 offense.

If four demerit points are accumulated, further penalties may follow, including a possible suspension.

These demerit points will stay for a period of carryover for three years, thus making it really important for the captains to stay in line.

This is to ensure a level and fair contest without the captain’s suspension hindering the team’s fortunes.

2. Saliva Ban Lifted

After four years of restrictions, bowlers will once again be allowed to use saliva to shine the ball in IPL 2025. The saliva ban, imposed at that time because of COVID-19 pandemic precautions, actually restrained bowlers from swing bowling, mainly in the initial overs.

The change allows fast bowlers better chances to move the ball in the air, particularly under lights, which in all likelihood will create a competitive scenario in the powerplays.

3. Impact Player Rule to Stay Until IPL 2027

The Rule of the Impact Player, which created a lot of debate since its introduction is to remain until at least IPL 2027. It allows a team to substitute one player mid-match lying with strategy within the game.

BCCI officials have mentioned that a review of the rule is to be conducted after the 2027 season.

The rule might stay as they feel it has managed to keep the balance between the teams and therefore, dynamic changes to the game.

Although it has been opposed by some bowlers and experts alike for upsetting the balance between bat and ball, now the teams have to put their heads around the use of this rule strategically for the next few seasons if it is to remain.

4. Further Use of Decision-Review System (DRS)

In IPL 2025 cloud systems, uh, fair-play prejudices will prevail. Players will have a total chance of being heard in three challenges upon umpiring calls: height no-ball; and wides outside the off-stump.

The decision was taken after multiple instances in preceding seasons have left many a team cursing the umpires’ subjective interpretation of height-based no-balls and wide deliveries. The rationale provides fewer grounds for so much erroneous judgment, thus fairer would be the game.

5. Second-Ball Rule for Dew-Affected Matches

The most important innovation brought out in IPL 2025 is the introduction of the Second Ball Rule to thwart gusts of dew in night matches.

According to this rule, bowling teams can choose to adopt a second ball after the 11th over of the second innings, provided that the state of the ball has been considerably altered by dew, as felt by the umpires.

An exception to this rule shall be made with respect to second-ball matches during the day, starting at 3:30 PM IST.

This is aimed to reduce these imbalances and level out the advantages for teams bowling second, in a historically dew-dominated scenario where gripping the ball has always been a substantial challenge.

How Will These Rule Changes Impact IPL 2025?

These rules are expected to cause a paradigm change for teams in their approach to the game. The advantage of removing bans on captains for slow over-rates is that the teams will not be penalized by suspensions. Saliva usage is back in favor of bowlers, and the Second Ball Rule would affect run chases considerably in dew. With the extended DRS, umpiring controversies should be lowered, bringing more transparency and equity to the match.

Conclusion

With all of these strategic changes, IPL 2025 will surely be a more exhilarating one. From enhanced umpiring decisions to more balance on bat and ball, these rules will refine the T20 entertainment. As teams prepare for the super-exciting tournament, fans can be assured this will be nothing less than a captivating cricketing face-off!
